Fostering Inclusivity and Camaraderie
The Bounce the Stigma basketball camp is more than just a sports event; it's a platform for empowerment and community building. "Basketball is a game that brings everybody together," says Mike Simmel, the CEO of Bounce the Stigma. "Some places you go, it doesn't include people, but what we try to do here is we try to include everybody, make everybody feel like they won."This inclusive approach is evident in the camp's setup, where student-athletes volunteer as coaches, guiding and mentoring the participants. Richard Greene, a parent whose son Alex attended the camp, marveled at the interaction between the campers and the coaches. "He was a little nervous, of course, about coming, he had not been to any event like this before, but he's had a great time, he's learned a lot," Greene shared.Celebrating Achievements and Building Confidence
The camp's focus on inclusion extends beyond the court, as each participant receives a free basketball, a t-shirt, and an accomplishment award. These tangible rewards not only recognize the campers' efforts but also serve to boost their self-esteem and confidence."What we try to do here is we try to include everybody, make everybody feel like they won," Simmel emphasized. This sentiment resonates deeply, as the camp aims to create an environment where every participant feels valued, celebrated, and empowered.Fostering a Supportive Community
The Bounce the Stigma basketball camp is more than just a two-day event; it's a testament to the power of community. By bringing together individuals with diverse abilities and backgrounds, the camp fosters a sense of belonging and camaraderie that extends beyond the court."Basketball is an all, is a game that brings everybody together, you know, it's all about including," Simmel said. This inclusive approach is not only transformative for the participants but also serves as a model for the broader community, inspiring others to embrace diversity and create opportunities for individuals with special needs to thrive.Empowering the Next Generation
The Bounce the Stigma basketball camp is more than just a sports event; it's a catalyst for change. By providing a platform for individuals with special needs to showcase their talents and abilities, the camp is challenging societal perceptions and breaking down barriers."Some places you go, it doesn't include people, but what we try to do here is we try to include everybody, make everybody feel like they won," Simmel said. This commitment to inclusion is not only empowering the participants but also inspiring the next generation of leaders and advocates. As the camp continues to grow and expand, its impact will ripple through the community, inspiring others to follow in its footsteps and create more inclusive spaces for individuals with special needs to thrive.
